The NHRI participates as an "Observer" in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) meeting to adopt its recommendations for the UAE

Geneva - The 54th session of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations Office in Geneva witnessed the participation of the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) delegation, headed by H.E. Fatima Al Kaabi, Deputy Chairperson of the NHRI.

The delegation participated as an "Observer" to adopt the recommendations of the fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) for the United Arab Emirates, which was held on 3 October, 2023.
The delegation also participated in several human rights related events aligned with the NHRI’s mandate, aiming to enhance and protect human rights.
Commenting on the participation of the NHRI, H.E. Fatima Al Kaabi emphasised that the NHRI's participation in the 54th session of the Human Rights Council aligns with the Institution's commitment to following international human rights developments and conveying the perspectives of countries and non-governmental organisations regarding the ongoing progress in the United Arab Emirates' human rights journey.
Her Excellency also appreciated the recognition received from countries and organisations for the UAE's efforts in protecting human rights, particularly through the establishment of the National Human Rights Institution in accordance with the Paris Principles.

The participation of the NHRI delegation at this session of the Human Rights Council reflects the UAE's ongoing focus on human rights and its commitment to following and addressing international human rights developments.

The NHRI delegation included H.E. Maryam Al Ahmadi, Head of the International Relations and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee; Ms. Alya Almaazmi - Section Head of Committee Affairs Department - Acting Director of the Council and its Committees Office; and Mr. Abdulaziz Alawbathani, Head of the International and Regional Organisations Department.

It is worth noting that the NHRI also participated as an "Observer" during the Universal Periodic Review session for the UAE last May. The UAE presented its fourth national report as part of the Universal Periodic Review mechanism, which is an important international mechanism for fostering international cooperation and sustainable dialogue on human rights and related developments.
